My dear brother and sister, the stability of the home, the serenity of marriage, and the preservation of the family all rest upon one foundational pillar: the qiwāmah of the man - his leadership, his strength, his protection, and his responsibility.
Allah, the All-Wise, ordained this role for the man, not as a privilege, but as a duty - because He created him with the necessary qualities to carry it: firmness, patience, resilience, and reason. It is a divine assignment, not a cultural construct, and when it is upheld with justice and compassion, the home thrives.
Al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: “Women are of four types, and men are of four types: - A masculine man with a feminine woman - he is her leader and protector. - A feminine man with a masculine woman - she dominates him. - A masculine man with a masculine woman - they are like two rams locking horns. - A feminine man with a feminine woman - there is no good in either of them, and they will not succeed.”
This profound insight, narrated in early generations, remains a mirror for our times. When qiwāmah is present - when the man leads with strength, mercy, and taqwā - the woman flourishes in her natural disposition. But when the man is weak, passive, or absent from his role, she is forced into a position that distorts her nature, tires her soul, and turns the home upside down.
Indeed, many cases of women stepping beyond their fitrah stem not from rebellion, but from the vacuum created by men who have abandoned theirs.
When a man is indifferent to where his wife goes, who she mixes with, or what role she assumes, when he lets her manage the home like a commander without counsel or accountability - the balance is broken, the peace is disturbed, and the door to chaos is opened.
And how true is the saying: “I am not surprised that women have become masculine - what’s truly astonishing is the femininity of men!”
O servant of Allah, if you are a man - take your place. Fulfill your qiwāmah with honour. Lead with wisdom. Protect with firmness. Provide with dignity. Be the rock your household rests upon. And if you are a woman - honour this qiwāmah, support it, and find your peace beneath its shade.
For when each spouse lives by the fitrah Allah created them upon, the home becomes a garden - and when they rebel against it, it becomes a battlefield.
May Allah guide the men of this Ummah to rise, lead, and protect - and guide the women to love, follow, and flourish.
