Rowing Together Through the Sea of Marriage

Marriage is a shared journey sustained by unity, worship, patience, mercy, and two spouses rowing toward the same destination.

My dear brother and sister,

Indeed, marriage is a journey unlike any other, and the most beautiful way to picture it is as a small boat sailing across the vast sea of life. The sea is never still - its waves crash upon one another, sometimes gently carrying you forward, sometimes fiercely shaking you with storms and winds. Within it are calm breezes that bring comfort and joy, and also sudden gusts that test patience and endurance.

In this boat sit a husband and wife. If one rows alone, his arms will soon weaken, his spirit will soon tire, and the boat may drift off course. But when both take hold of the oars together - each giving strength, each giving effort - the boat moves smoothly, steadily, and firmly toward its destination. This is why the righteous man and the righteous woman are never truly complete until they find one another. Together, they row this boat across the ocean of life.

Yet, let it be known: the path will not always be calm. Storms will come, waves will rock the boat, and winds may howl against it. Arguments may arise, hardships may test the bond, and trials may seek to shake the very foundation of the marriage. But what keeps the boat afloat and steady is not wealth, not beauty, nor fleeting emotions - it is the strength of those within it. That strength is built upon love and affection between spouses, upon mercy and patience, upon adherence to the religion of Allah, upon fear of Him, piety, and good character - for without this the boat will sink and the marriage will not last.

Look at the marriages that have endured for decades, where old men still smile at their wives with affection, and women still hold the hands of their husbands with tenderness. What has kept them together? Not the passing glow of youth, nor the charm of fleeting beauty, but their shared rowing - their unity in worship, their trust in Allah, their patience with one another, and their love that grew deeper with every trial they overcame.

And look at the opposite - marriages where the boat sank quickly. It was not the storm that destroyed them, but the absence of unity inside. One rowed while the other refused. One gave effort while the other withheld. One sought Allah’s pleasure while the other chased worldly desires. In such a state, how can the boat remain steady?

So, my brother, if you wish for a marriage that lasts, then row with your wife, not against her. And my sister, if you wish for a life of tranquility, then row alongside your husband, not away from him. Let your oars be love, patience, and mercy. Let your compass be the Qur’an and Sunnah. And let your anchor be taqwā - fear of Allah and piety.

For indeed, only with this will your boat cross the sea of life safely, until you reach the shore of the Hereafter together, and your final destination is Paradise.
